Which licence?

Taxi driver licence or private hire licence?

Councils issue two main types of driver licence. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right route before you book training.

Taxi (hackney carriage) driver licence

A licensed taxi can be hailed in the street, picked up from a taxi rank or pre-booked. Many councils ask taxi drivers to pass a knowledge test and a driving assessment before the badge is issued.

Private hire driver licence

Private hire vehicles must be pre-booked through a licensed operator and cannot be hailed in the street. Training and test requirements differ from one council to the next.

Both licences are issued by the licensing council (or TfL in London), not by UK Taxi College. Read our taxi licence guide or take the free taxi route check to see which one suits you.

How many questions are in the Oldham taxi knowledge test?

What tests do I need to pass for a Liverpool taxi badge?

First complete the Liverpool Standard Part 1 qualification and pass the Street Knowledge Test. After that you complete the DBS and DVLA checks, a medical and a right-to-work check, and provide the required documents.

What is the difference between a taxi badge and a private hire licence?

A taxi (hackney carriage) can be hailed in the street, picked up from a rank or pre-booked. A private hire vehicle must be pre-booked through a licensed operator. Both need a driver licence from the local council, and requirements vary by council.

Do I need an Enhanced DBS check and a medical to become a taxi driver?

Most councils require an Enhanced DBS check and a medical fitness assessment before they issue a licence. The exact medical standard and who can carry it out varies by council, so check with yours or ask our team.

Does UK Taxi College issue the taxi badge?

No. Your licence is issued by the council, or by TfL in London, and the council makes the final decision. We provide training, exam preparation, DBS and medical arrangements, and we prepare and submit your application.

Which council should I apply to for my taxi badge?

A licence generally lets you work in the area of the council that issues it, so most drivers apply to the council covering where they plan to work. Not sure? Use our free taxi route check.
